Former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan is stepping into a new arena as he joins the political fray, contesting from Berhampore constituency in West Bengal for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in May 2024. Representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Pathan’s move aligns with the party’s strategy as it gears up for a grand inauguration of its 2024 campaign, dubbed ‘Jonogorjon Sabha’, at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Grounds. During this event, the TMC unveiled its line up of 42 candidates, setting the stage for a crucial electoral contest.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee were the key figures at the rally, rallying the party’s supporters and setting the tone for the upcoming elections. The presence of six to eight lakh supporters and numerous block-level leaders from various districts electrified the atmosphere, laying the groundwork for a spirited campaign.

In addition to Pathan, former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad, a long-standing member of the TMC, is set to contest from the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency. Joining them is former India player Manoj Tiwary, currently serving as an MLA in Shibpur, Howrah. This influx of cricketers into politics under the TMC banner signals a trend of sports personalities transitioning into the political arena, showcasing their aspirations beyond the cricket field.
