As the Kolkata Knight Riders gear up for the upcoming IPL 2024 season, they find themselves grappling with a familiar setback – the injury concerns surrounding their skipper, Shreyas Iyer. The dynamic batsman has encountered a resurgence of his back injury, casting doubts over his availability for the initial matches of the tournament.

Iyer’s troubles resurfaced during his impressive 95-run knock in the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha. This setback comes after the cricketer underwent surgery for the same issue in 2023, which sidelined him for an extended period until his return during the Asia Cup in September.

Despite the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) withholding specific details regarding Iyer’s injury, sources close to the team have indicated a grim outlook. It is reported that Iyer may not take the field for the final day of the Ranji Trophy final and is at risk of missing the early fixtures of the IPL.

A source revealed to The Times of India, “It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury which has got aggravated. It’s unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL.”

Iyer’s struggles with his back have been evident, with complaints emerging during the England series, leading to his omission after the second Test. Even in domestic cricket, he opted out of Mumbai’s quarterfinal clash citing back pain, raising concerns about his fitness.

The situation was compounded by the controversial issuance of a fit certificate by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical head Nitin Patel, a decision that played a significant role in Iyer’s exclusion from the BCCI’s annual central contract.

For the Kolkata Knight Riders, Iyer’s absence poses a significant setback, given his pivotal role in the team’s lineup. In previous seasons, the franchise had to make do without his services, with Nitish Rana assuming captaincy duties in his stead.

Looking ahead, with Iyer’s participation uncertain, Rana is expected to lead the team once again. The question of his replacement in the playing XI looms, with Manish Pandey emerging as a potential candidate, although final decisions are yet to be made.

As the KKR squad prepares to assemble in Kolkata on March 14 ahead of their opening encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23, all eyes will be on how the franchise addresses the Iyer situation during their camp. The team management faces the challenge of finding suitable alternatives and ensuring the squad remains competitive despite this setback.
