Every station of the Nagpur Metro is constructed uniquely, under the motto ‘Metro for Everyone.’ Besides easy access, these metro stations provide a childcare facility room and CCTV surveillance. Moreover, these metro stations provide top-rated facilities for physically differently-abled travellers and multi-modal amenities.

Nagpur Metro’s Automated Fare Collection System

The Nagpur Metro Rail ticketing solution is a cutting-edge Automated Fare Collection System based on Contactless Fare Media Technology.

The fare collection mechanism splits metro stations into paid and unpaid categories. Automatic entry/exit gates and fences divide the paid and unpaid zones. It ensures that only those with a valid ticket are allowed to enter the system. The system is meant to be closed with ticket checks at both entry and departure, ensuring that all tickets are checked 100% of the time.

Contactless Smart Card (CSC) and Contactless Smart Token (CST) tickets are available. Contactless Tokens are pre-paid fare media that can be used to travel between a set of fixed stations. Tokens can be bought for a single or return travel and are a better fare media option for non-frequent riders.

Contactless Smart Cards have stored-value cards that can be monetary (e-Purse), non-monetary (Pass), or a combination of both, with various features to entice regular and frequent users.

The AFC System accepts a variety of passes/tickets and provides a stage-based price structure. It’s also adaptable enough to accommodate additional fare structures/ticketing options, such as flat fares, time-based fares, free transfers across modes, etc.

SBI MAHA Card for Nagpur Metro

As a consortium leader, SBI and its AFC and System Integrator partners implemented the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system for the Nagpur Metro Project.

MAHA Card has a stored value balance feature that allows offline transactions at Nagpur metro stations. Travellers must tap their MAHA Card at the platform’s entry gate and then tap their card again at the destination station’s exit gate after finishing their journey.

The card has a dual interface (EMV chip) with stored value functionality for a secure, convenient, and seamless payment process. Metro riders can get a MAHA Card by applying at a metro station’s desk. Commuters will be needed to fill in basic information in an application form before verifying a one-time PIN sent to their phone number. After completing the application process, commuters must pay a one-time card issuance fee of INR 150 and then top up the card with a minimum of INR 100 and multiples of INR 100, which can stretch up to INR 2,000 for hassle-free metro travel. MAHA card has a unique function called saved value balance, allowing users to conduct offline transactions at Nagpur Metro stations.

After the exit tap, the fare amount will be automatically deducted from the card’s stored value balance. Commuters can check the balance of their MAHA cards at metro stations using Ticket Readers (TRs).

Covid-19 Information for Nagpur Metro

Maha Metro ensures that passengers are kept safe during the pandemic. Trains and stations are disinfected regularly. The cash shared by the passengers is cleaned via UV radiation before being deposited. Passengers are reminded to follow government rules for covid safety daily.

Nagpur Metro Finds a Place in Guinness World Records

The Nagpur metro has secured a place in the coveted Guinness World Record for creating the longest double-decker viaduct for the metro line. Built on the Nagpur Metro Wardha Road section, the viaduct is about 3.14 Km long.

At the felicitation ceremony, Brajesh Dixit, MD, Maharashtra Metro, received the record certificate from the Guinness World Record management. He shared that constructing the viaduct was one of the biggest challenges in the metro project.

Moreover, the stretch is already recognised as the longest viaduct in Asia and India by the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records, respectively.

The concerned viaduct is a double-decker viaduct built jointly by the National Highways Development Authority (NHAI) and Maharashtra Metro. While there is a pre-existing highway in the first layer, it has a flyover highway in the second layer and Nagpur metro rail in the third. The flyover highway is built at the height of nine metres from the ground; the Nagpur metro level is around 20-metre height. A similar structure is also planned.
