Pune Metro History

On December 8, 2016, the cabinet authorized the Pune Metro Project. MAHA Metro, a Special Purpose Vehicle of India and the Government of Maharashtra, is in charge of the Pune Metro route project. The project aims to upgrade Pune’s infrastructure and build world-class stations and surrounding areas to highlight the city’s rich cultural legacy. There will be three lines in the Pune Metro route.

On January 8, 2018,  the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) granted Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. (HCC) a Rs 484-crore contract for the Pune Metro Route Project. PMRDA awarded a concession contract to the Trail Urban Transport-Siemens consortium in September 2019.

As of April 2020, the project had made 49.64 per cent progress on excavation work for the elevated and underground metro stations. Tunnelling work in the northern half of the underground metro route stations is currently underway.

Pune Metro Rail’s Unique Features

Made In India: Pune Metro coaches are made in India as part of the union government’s Make in India policy. Over 70% of the trainers are made up of indigenous people.

Lightest Metro:
Pune’s lightest metro compartments are constructed with an aluminium metal, which is 6.5 per cent lighter than traditional steel coaches. These compartments will last longer, require less maintenance, and consume less energy.

Underground Stations That Save Space:
The Pune Metro’s subterranean segment passes through the city’s most crowded area. The traditional ‘Cut and Cover’ method of erecting subterranean stations was not practicable due to the scarcity of space in these places.

Rooftop And Grid Solar Energy Integration:
Since its beginning, Pune Metro has planned to install approx. 11.20MWp solar power generation on the rooftops of elevated stations.

The energy formed will be used in train stations and traction power. This will save Rs 20 crores per year in energy costs and prevent the release of roughly 25,000 tons of CO2.

Zero Discharge:
Maha Metro and the DRDO have agreed to construct anaerobic biodigester technology for 100 per cent wastewater management. For all Pune Metro stations, this technique will result in zero discharge into the municipal wastewater system.

The first and second lines began construction in December 2016, with both lines projected to be operational by 2022. The third line is scheduled to open in March 2023.

  • Line 1: PCMC building – Swargate
  • Line 2:  Vanaz – Ramwadi
